Why Small Business Owners Struggle to Make a Profit

Stop throwing your money away on marketing that doesn't work!
Have you ever wondered why your hard-earned marketing dollars fail to get a great return for you?
Have you ever wondered how you might improve your marketing return without spending more money?
Do you want to know why most marketing spending is a waste of time, effort and money?
Stop wasting your valuable time, effort and hard-earned money on marketing that does not work!
Understanding the purpose of marketing is the first step to making your marketing work better for you. By knowing what you are trying to do with your marketing activities and utilisation of those limited resources called dollars, you will dramatically improve the return on investment. So, understanding what marketing is all about is fundamental to getting optimum results and in this article I am going to demonstrate to you just what you need to know.
One of the most common mistakes small business owners make is to spend money on the wrong type of marketing. They spend money on something called tactical marketing. That is, how their marketing dollar will be spent. Things such as, "should we use AdWords or not, how much should we spend, what key words should we target, should we do direct mail or not, is my website due for an upgrade?" In other words, how to spend the advertising dollar as opposed to spending their money firstly on strategic marketing.
Strategic marketing is the message they want to send and who to send the message to. In other words, who is our most likely buyer, what are their pain points, what problem do they want solved, what solution do we have that is unique and what is the decision-making process those prospects are likely to follow.
Marketing is about understanding the needs, wants and desires of a market, how those needs, wants and desires are currently being met by competitors in the market and how you can take advantage of the opportunities that exist in those markets to make a profit.
To make the most profit from any market you want to create a market dominating position. That is a position that once identified can be communicated to your target audience with the clear understanding that you are the obvious choice for selection to solve their pain points.
This is done by focussing your advertising messages clearly to evoke an action from the prospective customer that starts them on the buying journey with you. It is not necessarily a message, in the first instance, to buy now! Unless it is an emergency service that you are offering, Your message should be to engage the prospect in the buying journey you would have developed that takes them through the identified buying process you discovered in your research. This could be a process involving a number of logical steps. You must take prospects on that journey.
Along the journey you will need to maintain some form of communication and contact with the prospect and that is one of the reasons why tactical marketing fails. It tends to focus on, "do it now actions". Buy now, call now, act now. Most buyers are not ready to, "do it now". Most buyers, in fact some would say more than 98% of buyers are not ready to buy now. Most buyers are still going along the buying journey. Only as many as 2% of buyers are at the end of that journey and are ready to act now.
If only 2% of buyers are ready to buy now and you have focussed your marketing activities on tactical marketing, i.e. using AdWords and bidding for keywords that get a lot of attention, then you are targeting 2% of the potential buyers for your product or service. The end results are poor returns and a tendency to blame the medium used for the poor results. AdWords works great when done right.
Put another way, tactical marketing means you are financially contributing to the research project of the other 98% of potential buyers who may just end up buying from your competitors. If 98% of buyers today are searching for information, after all we live in the information age, then why would you want to do that and not get to control the rest of the conversation, the education process with those same potential buyers?
Strategic marketing on the other hand identifies how to add to the education process and once a potential buyer engages with you, you want to capture them to be able to control the conversation, with you, AWAY from your competitors. This is what will provide you with the greatest return for your dollar. This is what will turn your business into a profit-making machine.
Focus on strategic marketing activities first. Get your messages right before you spend your hard-earned dollars making advertising platform owners rich. Let other competitors flounder around educating your prospects, but only until you decide to engage them in your conversation. Then keep them under control and watch the results grow.

Depending On Yourself Without Doubt - Key To Success

Expert Author Dorothy M. Neddermeyer, PhD
Depending on yourself, without a doubt, is easier than you might think. You have the courage and strength within you to move beyond fear and limitation, with which to take your life to the next level. Teachers/professionals may point the way, but you yourself need to take every step necessary to move in the direction of your soul and life purpose.
Avoid fooling yourself to believe that your happiness and success is in the hands of other people about what they will or won't do for you or if you get their validation or not. It is entirely up to you if you desire happiness and independence or not. No one is forcing you to hang out with people who don't resonate with your values, desires or dreams.
Avoid allowing anyone to tell you how to live your life when you know in your heart which steps lead in the direction of your soul's path.
Mental/Emotional health is a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his/her potential while navigating the stresses and vicissitudes of life, working productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her/his community.
Mental/Emotional and Physical Health and Wellness is the act of remaining calm and focused while working things out with respect and unconditional intent to find a solution. Ultimately your personal character; personal strength and courage will evolve. To attain wellness requires you to make healthy choices in nutrition, relationships, social contact, work, and leisure activities.
Mind, Body, and Spirit transformation is possible without psychotropic drugs, artificial hypnotic inductions, rituals, life-long coping strategies, and psychic interventions. I have assisted many people to transform/ transmute the cause of what's preventing them from reaching their desires.
You can do it.
Remember, success is nothing more than a state of mind. You attract what you focus on or move it away, it all depends on the way you think. As Henry Ford aptly said, "If you think you can do a thing, or you think you can't, you are right."

How to Create a Vision Board That Manifests

One of my favorite ways to start the new year s with a vision board. Creating a vision board is a form of manifesting that is extremely powerful. A good vision board holds the "essence" of your future self and lifestyle. The most common mistake people make when creating a vision board is making it a "to do" list or a goal sheet. Refrain from putting up jobs or goals, as those are the means to the quality and outcome of your vision, not the essence of who you will be. This does not mean we don't have work or career goals it simply puts the focus on how the work you do today is the vehicle to build our vision. They both align but for the purpose of our vision we are unattached to the how and connecting to the WHY!
For the purpose of this vision work I am presenting, we acknowledge it is the work of the heart and soul and therefore needs to be void of reason and thinking. The goal of your vision board is to create the story of the future self. The board can serve as a process or pathway to creating goals but does not require you include them.
Often as a result of creating a vision board you will find the sub conscious dreams are brought into the conscious mind and in turn, your reality by way of experiences and opportunities. At this point we have the ability to choose what path we take. Therefore it is very important to be open-minded and mindful of what may be coming into your reality.
The energy that emanates from your vision is of your higher self and therefore may challenge you to be out of your comfort zone in any area that requires growth. This is now the time to set goals to meet the challenges. Opportunities may look like seeing a course that interests you, a job or an event. They may ask you to give of your time, energy or money and cause you to reconsider and say no. But often it is a matter of prioritizing our daily tasks and finances to serve this new direction. Ultimately the things we set out to achieve evolve us into the person of our vision board story and they will be worth the investment.
Vision board exercise:
  1. Choose magazines because you like the cover. Don't look through them just simply pick them up. (I often go to thrift stores and purchase used ones if I don't have enough lying around my house.)
  2. Choose words or phrases to cut out that resonate with who you are aspiring to be or who you are would like to become.
  3. Choose photos because you like the color, the look, the idea, not because it says who you think you currently are or what you now do. Simply cut pictures out of magazines without judgment.
  4. Once all your photos are clipped, arrange them in "categories" to create mini stories. Stories can be my love life, my journeys, my adventures, my dreams, my future, my aspirations, my health and wellness, my vitality, etc..
  5. You can use your word and phrase clippings to paste to each grouping or you can write your own words.
  6. If you find your pictures agitate you, create tension, anxiety or even a fraction of stress, eliminate them. Its most likely a goal not a vision.
  7. Once you like your stories and they "feel" right glue them onto your vision board.
  8. Hang your vision board somewhere you can take time to reflect on it that's in a space personal to you.
Vision Board Meditation:
  • To start a vision board meditation simply allow yourself a few minutes of time.
  • Set your focus to your heart area and ask that your mind stills while your heart "sees" the board.
  • Take a moment in each story or category to name how this makes you feel. Not sure yet? Just ask that you become aware. Once you have a feeling, amplify it by seeing yourself in this story. What attributes, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually have you attained by bringing this story into your life. Daydream till it "FEELS" good in every cell of your body.
  • If you feel your thoughts judging or questioning you can write them down and choose to work on this later. Or, you can simply thank them for showing up and bringing awareness but that you are choosing to enjoy this story.
  • You can choose one category at a time or continue with your whole vision board till complete. There is no right or wrong way to do this. Once I'm finished envisioning I like to close my quest with a deep breath and as I release it I put a smile on my face, love and joy in my heart and say... And so it is.
The vision you put forth IS manifesting and so it is very important to stay open, non judgmental and pass experiences and opportunities through the heart when they arise. Try saying yes more often and see where it leads!

Negative Thinking Balances Your Decision

Worrying is different from thinking. Worrying dwells on bad thoughts created from one conceptual situation, while thinking is processing useful judgment to avoid the unfavorable situation. Many people keep on telling to avoid negative thinker because they attract negative vibes. I am not disparaging the good side of positive attitude and optimism, what I want to emphasize is to try looking at the other views of a person labeled as a negative thinker. In the law of attraction, we are manipulating our mind to create things eventually so it depends on a person's mind on what he thinks to materialize them into reality, but the law of attraction is realizable if you take action to put all things the way you want it to be. You could serve as a driving force to others by sending out your opinion, feeling, and attracting back more of what you have planned. Your action will either create a good or bad outcome from your decisions.
With all due respect to people trying to avoid negative thinker, I am more challenged by someone saying a contrary outcome, I understand what they are dealing with, and they are just being a defensive pessimist. Individuals behaving in defensive pessimism are strategically preparing themselves how to handle uneasiness or discomfort to an uncertain outcome. There have been many "ifs" and "buts" on their minds to make a clear decision just like when making a computer program flowchart, they stop and logically process what is inside the decision box that there is certain action if you decide to go here and there. When they are in defensive thinking, low expectations would arise in a way they plan of what action to do to avoid the uncertain events. In doing this, is helping them to prevent anxiety overcomes their feelings.
Negative people are well aware of the possible problem and thinking ahead would lead them for possible actions to avoid worst-case scenarios.
There are two kinds of negative thinker:
  • A negative thinker with the same trait as with positive thinker. These people are thinking of imaginary events but the traits they both apply are doing nothing and just wait until the situation comes, they do not have a systematic plan to solve or mitigate the unpleasant situation.
  • A negative thinker with a solution to apply. This kind of person is thinking ahead what might be the problem and from imaginary thoughts, he will plan activities to solve or alleviate the problem.
Here is where things get fascinating about a negative thinker: A defensive pessimist heard the news that he must register his job position in an authorized committee to renew his residential identity card in a foreign country. His thought flooded with many "ifs" even though not sure if his job position is included among the professions to be registered, in no time he immediately applied for a Special Power of Attorney for a family member and sent this to his home country to get all his credentials as requirements to be submitted to the committee. When the time comes to renew his residential identity. He had now on his hands all the supporting documents and timely submitted this to the committee; the hassle of chasing time to prepare all the documents are being replaced by convenience.
In one occasion, he read news about the possible nationalization scheme as a new policy. All expatriates will be replaced by its local citizens, even though not sure that his job position is included among the list of professions to be replaced, he created plans on how to abate his worries about filling the gaps of years will be lost in his retirement years. He started to save money every payday and sent it back home to deposit in the bank or investing it in government bonds. In just a few years, his money earned interest and as expected the nationalization scheme came, without any hesitation, he accepted his fate and went home with his family with enough savings to sustain a family business.
Negative thinkers deal with realism and rationalism because they behave toward the actual situation, gathering information and taking conscious action. While being positive thinker dwells on being complacent with the imaginary concept until it is too late to suppress the bad outcome.
When events are not yet sure to happen, be specific on your goals and try to get in touch with reality because it will probably fall somewhere in between. Beyond positive and negative retrospect, planning is best to get you through countless roadblocks. If someone tells you to set your mind positively, acknowledge and warn them that negative thinker is another friend reminding you to anticipate possible outcomes before the situation controls you.

How to Set Personal Life Goals for Growth

Change is said to be the only constant in life. Who you were five years ago is not the person you are today. However, you might be feeling like you are just drifting through like aimlessly without any target for where you want to be.
If that feels like you, then you probably have not set any life goals for yourself. Life goals are important because they give guide you, give you focus and a yardstick to know when you are headed in the right direction.
What are life goals?
When most people think of personal development, finances come to mind. However, personal development entails continuous expansion of various facets of your life including spiritual, social, mental and physical.
If any one of these facets of your life isn't in order, then all the others might crumble. Self-development, therefore, is multi-faceted and a continuous process that seeks to achieve self-actualization. It therefore never stops.
How to Set Personal Life Goals
You probably have heard that goals should be SMART. This means that they should be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound. When your goals are SMART, you are able to visualize them and set up a plan on how to achieve them in the decided time-frame.
Before you jump into writing down SMART goals, you must visualize your life in five or ten years to come. What do you want to achieve by then?
Take the large goals and the big picture and break it down into smaller goals that you should achieve progressively starting today. The smaller you break down your goals, the easier it becomes to achieve them. As you achieve smaller goals, you get motivated because the bigger picture becomes that much closer every day.
Categories you Might Set Life Goals In
As stated earlier, personal development is multi-faceted. It involves all aspects of your life including the following: career, financial, education, family, health, attitude, physical, pleasure, social, love, relationships and spiritual.
It is essential that you focus on all aspects of your life and aim to get better every day.
Take Action
Setting goals and having a plan is one thing; but without action, it all becomes wishful thinking. It is important, therefore, that you start today to work on your goals. As started earlier, it becomes easy to achieve the bigger goals when they are broken down into smaller ones.
Do something daily or weekly that works towards your long term goal without thinking of how long you have to do it. This will prevent you from feeling overwhelmed by how much you have to achieve.
Conduct Progress Reviews
You will not know how far you have come unless you are able to measure your progress. A progress review helps you know whether you are still on track or you have derailed off what you should have been doing.
You can choose when to do the progress reviews based on the goals you need to achieve. You can do it annually, semi-annually or even quarterly.
Go on and use this guide to set smart personal life goals that will see you achieve you dreams in all the facets of your life.

10 Benefits of Knowing Your Purpose

"To love what you do and feel that it matters-how could anything be more fun?" ~ Katharine Graham

What is so important about having a purpose in life? Increasingly, people are looking for something more than just "making a living." They're realizing that there seems to be something missing in their lives and they're experiencing an inner sense of dissatisfaction. Many outwardly successful people describe feeling "off-track" in some way or a sense of being incomplete. That missing something is a sense of purpose.
Without purpose, we may drift through life directionless and unfulfilled. According to business psychologist and psychotherapist Douglas La Bier, "The consequences of not finding your purpose include chronic, lingering dissatisfaction; an absence of inner peace and a sense of not being fully in sync with your inner self."
Here are some of the benefits of connecting with and pursuing your purpose:
1. It gives you control over your own direction in life. You stop following the "shoulds" of family and society and set your own course for what you want to do with your life.
2. You're more likely to have a healthier outlook on life and be more resistant to stress.
3. You have more focus in life, making choices based on what's meaningful to you.
4. You have a greater sense of inner peace and satisfaction as you align with what you were "made for."
5. You live more in the flow of life, rather than in struggle. This isn't to say there aren't challenges but when you have a sense of meaning and purpose the challenges don't seem as large and you get through them more quickly and easily. You're better able to handle the ups and downs of life. *
6. You enjoy more satisfying relationships. A 2009 study of over 1,000 adults found that those with a high sense of meaning in their lives spent more time and attention on their loved ones and communities. They were more engaged with their families, neighbors and colleagues.
7. It redefines what success means to you. It's not about climbing the corporate ladder, a particular title or how much money you make. This isn't to say you can't make good money. When you're doing what you love you are actually more aligned to everything you want, including financial abundance. It simply means that the usual markers of success in our society are not as important as the inner satisfaction of how you're spending your time. Success is defined by what brings you joy.
8. You'll love knowing what you're doing is making a contribution to the larger whole. When you're "on purpose" you'll be doing what you love and utilizing your talents in a way that adds more positive energy to the world. Serving more than your own self-interest connects you to your higher self. It opens your heart and summons your spirit.
9. Your overall happiness increases and you have more of a zest for life!
10. Having a sense of purpose can help you live longer! **
If you've connected with your purpose, congratulations! You're already reaping the rewards of "doing what you love and feeling that it matters." Whatever it is that you've found, if it is your passion and has meaning for you, it does matter.
If you're still wondering what your purpose is, I encourage you to explore the possibilities. What do you love to do? What talents and skills do you enjoy using? You may want to enlist the help of a coach to go deeper. The world is waiting for your unique gifts!
